When a Latina student travels to the US to work at a resort during her college’s vacations, she is threatened with salary and staff cuts for the off-season, she must to fight to keep her job and generate extra money to recoup her investment.

*She is in a work and cultural exchange program called “work & travel USA”. It’s a popular and expensive program in Latinoamerica for college students. Duration is 4 months*

Mike, I think the use/placement of “off-season” is throwing us off – no pun intended 😊
Proposed logic: A Latin student buys a package to experience/work in the USA during her college off-season. When she arrives in the states to work, her employment is threatened which means she will lose her recoup $ thus she must stay employed or bust.

I did some research on Work & Travel USA, some packages were 20K USD, but they are also known for their “preparation” so DenniseKJ you would need something extreme to throw their model off to end up in her situation – like a pandemic?
      Please clarify.

She’s only travelled there for the vacation season, right? So, since she’ll be heading back to college in the off-season, why is she threatened with salary cuts and being fired when she’s not even going to be there? She doesn’t need her job off-season, she’ll be in school!

What investment? (The bit of text you’ve added below is fundamental to understanding her investment, but you might not have the opportunity to explain that to a reader).
